Why I’m skeptical about using virtual online whiteboards

You’ve probably used whiteboards a lot when working in an office. And this was surely a fun thing to do. But when the same comes to remote working, whiteboarding loses its charm. This is because no matter what you do, you just can’t replicate the feel of a real whiteboard in a virtual setting and the setup also will be incomplete.

If you are the type who walks around the office a lot and randomly note every interesting point, then you know that this can’t be mimicked. I have documented some tips on this here.

Luckily for you, with the increase in people working from home, the companies putting out tools to make this work great are also a lot. I have put together a set of products that you could use on this page.

Here are some I liked:

Whiteboard fox:

I was really impressed by how easy to use this is and that it’s really free and works in real-time. You just need to open the website and get working. Add your team for collaboration by making use of the participant ID feature and ge brainstorming.

Whizwall:

Whizwall lets you draw, paint and create great ideas simply by moving your phone all over the place. It’s like graffiti and makes the collboration really fun. I have used the free version only, but they have great features on the paid versions of both the iOS as well as Android apps.

Collaboard:

With an infinite whiteboard, this is a tool so that you don’t have to limit your ideas. Simple and poweful, it will take your brainstorming game up a notch. It is a pretty new addition to the online whiteboards and the free trial didn’t disappoint. Paid options from 5 €.

Grapic:

This tool lets you actually use a pen on paper and whiteboard. All you have to do is sketch your ideas and let the tool do the job for you. They have an AR setting which helps in maintaining a steady hand and record videos to share in real time. Currently in beta, free to use at the moment.

Realtime Board:

Now called Miro, this tool is a hybrid one and you can use it on both web as well as mobile. It allows you to export your final diagrams in various formats. It is also integrable with over 15 third party apps and is a great fit for big companies. The pricing plans might deter startups.

That’s all for now, check out other great onlne whiteboards here.
